Visa-free entry

Visa-Free Countries for Russia

Citizens of 68 countries can enter Russia for tourism, business visits, or transit without obtaining a visa in advance. This page explains who qualifies, how long you can stay, and what rules apply.

What is visa-free entry to Russia?

Russia maintains bilateral and multilateral agreements with dozens of countries that allow their citizens to enter, stay, and transit through Russian territory without a visa. These agreements are based on diplomatic reciprocity — if Russia's citizens can visit a country visa-free, that country's citizens often receive the same privilege in return.

Visa-free entry does not mean unlimited stay. Each agreement specifies a maximum duration (typically 30, 60, or 90 days) and may restrict the purpose of the visit to tourism, family visits, business meetings, or transit. Employment, study, and long-term residence always require a separate visa or permit.

How long can you stay?

30 days

Most common limit for tourism. Applies to countries like Israel, Brazil, Argentina, and South Korea.

60 days

Extended stay for select partners. Applies to countries like Thailand, Turkey (diplomatic passports), and some CIS states.

90 days

Maximum visa-free stay. Applies to CIS countries (Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, etc.) within a 180-day period.

Key rules for visa-free visitors

  • Valid passport required. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure date from Russia. Some agreements accept national ID cards (e.g., for CIS citizens).
  • Migration card. Upon arrival, you must fill out a migration card (issued on the plane or at the border). Keep it until departure — losing it means a fine and complications at exit.
  • Registration within 7 days. If staying more than 7 business days, you must register at your place of stay. Hotels do this automatically; private hosts must register you at the local migration office.
  • No overstay. Exceeding the allowed duration results in fines, deportation, and a multi-year entry ban. Always track your days carefully.
  • Purpose restrictions. Visa-free entry covers tourism, family visits, business meetings, and transit. Working, studying, or volunteering requires a separate visa even if your country has a visa-free agreement.

Why do these countries have visa-free access?

Visa-free agreements are the result of diplomatic negotiations and are typically driven by several factors:

  • Reciprocity: If Russia's citizens can visit a country without a visa, that country's citizens often receive the same right.
  • Historical ties: Former Soviet republics (CIS countries) maintain deep cultural, economic, and family connections with Russia, making visa-free movement essential.
  • Economic partnerships: Countries with strong trade and tourism ties (e.g., UAE, Turkey, Israel) benefit from simplified entry to boost bilateral commerce.
  • Regional agreements: The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) provides free movement for citizens of member states (Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan).
  • Tourism promotion: Russia has expanded visa-free access to boost inbound tourism, particularly from Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.

Documents to carry

Even though no visa is required, you should carry:

  1. A valid passport (or national ID for CIS citizens)
  2. Completed migration card (provided at the border)
  3. Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host's invitation)
  4. Travel insurance (recommended, sometimes checked)
  5. Return ticket or onward travel proof
  6. Sufficient funds for your stay (may be asked at border)
