Step 2 — where will you apply?

Where are you planning to apply for your Russian visa?

Pick the country and city whose Russian mission is responsible for your lawful residence. Temporary physical presence alone does not establish consular jurisdiction; confirm acceptance with the mission before you submit if you hold a passport issued by Italy.

How citizens of Italy enter Russia

Holders of an ordinary passport issued by Italy can enter Russia with the unified eVisa — apply online at evisa.kdmid.ru, where the applicable fee is shown. It permits 1 entry and a stay within 30 days. The published eVisa rule does not require an invitation. Work, study, additional entries or longer stays require the appropriate regular visa.

Unified e-Visa (online)

Official portal fee · stay within 30 days

Italy is one of the 65 nationalities eligible for Russia's unified e-Visa. You apply entirely online at the official MFA portal and follow its current application checklist. The published eVisa rule requires medical insurance, subject to any official exemption returned for the traveler. The published eVisa rule does not require an invitation. The eVisa currently permits 1 entry and a stay within 30 days.

Category-specific documents

Citizens of Italy apply for a standard Russian visa at a consulate or an authorised visa center. The supporting document depends on the visa category. For a tourist visa, tourist acceptance confirmation from an eligible issuer; a narrow accommodation-booking alternative applies only where the official rule allows it. Other categories use their own prescribed invitation or evidence.

Russian visa requirements for Italian citizens

Recommended route: Unified e-Visa for a qualifying short trip. Unified e-Visa for a qualifying short trip. For an ordinary Italian passport holder, the unified e-visa is the primary route for a qualifying short tourist trip: tourism is in scope; it is single-entry, valid for up to 120 days after issue, and allows a stay of up to 30 days from entry. Entry and exit must use an official listed e-visa border checkpoint. It is not the route for a purpose outside the published e-visa purposes. Italy is explicitly on the MFA's e-visa-eligible nationality list, so the page should lead with the online short-stay route rather than make a tourist invitation appear universal. The e-visa is now single entry, valid up to 120 days from issue, with a permitted stay up to 30 days from entry; these post-23-August-2025 terms replace the superseded pre-23-August-2025 duration limits.

Where to apply

  • E-visa: online at the Russian MFA e-visa portal (evisa.kdmid.ru); the official portal says no consular visit is needed.
  • Genoa/Liguria: official Russian Visa Centre, Via Bartolomeo Pagano 22–24, Genoa. The Genoa Consulate General directs visa-procedure matters there and publishes Liguria as its consular district.
  • Palermo: the official Russian Visa Centre closed on 1 May 2024; the official mission directs foreign-national visa questions to the Consulate General in Palermo.
  • Current official filing addresses/jurisdictions for Rome, Milan and Verona were not verified; see conflicts_or_unknowns.

Documents

  • Regular tourist visa: tourist-acceptance confirmation from a Russian tour operator in the Unified Federal Register of Tour Operators.
  • Passport valid at least six months after the requested visa's expected expiry, with at least two blank visa pages.
  • Printed and personally signed visa application, with a colour 3.5 × 4.5 cm photograph on a light background, subject to the official face/headwear rules.
  • Medical-insurance policy valid in the Russian Federation for the visa-validity period; the Genoa checklist specifies €30,000 medical-expense cover.
  • For a regular visa, complete the form at visa.kdmid.ru and print it.
  • At border control for a regular tourist visa, carry a copy of the tourist-acceptance confirmation; the Genoa mission also warns that absence of it or a confirmed-date return ticket can lead to refusal of entry and cancellation of the visa.

Invitation

The unified e-Visa does not require an invitation or hotel-booking confirmation. Regular tourist visa support differs: A regular tourist visa requires a confirmation of acceptance of the foreign tourist issued by a Russian tour operator entered in the Unified Federal Register of Tour Operators. A Russian hotel booking alone is expressly not a basis for issuance.

Processing and fees

  • E-visa: issued within 4 calendar days; the day of submission is not included.
  • Regular tourist visa (Genoa-published): standard 4–10 working days; expedited 1–3 working days.
  • Regular tourist visa (Palermo-published): standard 4–20 working days; expedited 1–3 working days. This conflicts with Genoa's standard band.
  • Regular tourist visa, Genoa-published consular tariff: single entry €80 (4–10 working days) or €160 (1–3 working days); double entry €128 or €256 respectively; multiple entry €240 or €480 respectively.
  • No exact current e-visa fee is included: no exact amount was published on the official pages reviewed. The MFA FAQ states paid e-visa applications are non-refundable regardless of outcome.

Medical insurance

For an e-visa, the MFA FAQ says insurance information is not essential in the application and its absence is not a reason to refuse issuance or entry. For a regular tourist visa, the Genoa checklist requires insurance valid in Russia for the whole visa period and €30,000 medical-expense cover; Palermo's published checklist requires Russia-valid insurance for the period but gives no coverage amount.

What is specific to Italian applicants

  • Italy is explicitly on the MFA's e-visa-eligible nationality list, so the page should lead with the online short-stay route rather than make a tourist invitation appear universal.
  • The e-visa is now single entry, valid up to 120 days from issue, with a permitted stay up to 30 days from entry; these post-23-August-2025 terms replace the superseded pre-23-August-2025 duration limits.
  • For a regular visa, a hotel reservation is expressly insufficient; a confirmation from a Russian tour operator in the Unified Federal Register is required, and the traveller should carry its copy at the border.
  • Genoa's official visa centre serves the Genoa mission's published Liguria district, while Palermo's visa centre has been closed since 1 May 2024.
  • The Genoa tourist-visa page identifies a six-month multiple-entry reciprocity arrangement only for Austria, Hungary, Greece, India and Spain—not Italy—so the page should not market a standard Italian multiple-entry tourist visa.

Check before payment

  • The official Genoa mission page says visa centres exist/existed in Rome, Milan, Palermo and Verona in addition to Genoa, but the official Palermo page says its centre closed on 1 May 2024. A current official Rome/Milan/Verona filing address or territorial allocation was not verified.
  • Published standard regular-tourist-visa processing differs by official mission: Genoa says 4–10 working days and Palermo says 4–20 working days. Confirm timing with the actual handling mission before promising it.
  • Regular-visa insurance details differ: Genoa specifies €30,000 medical cover; Palermo says insurance valid in Russia for the visa period but does not state an amount. Attribute €30,000 to Genoa or reconfirm at the actual filing post.

Russian consulates in Italy

There are 4 Russian diplomatic missions in Italy that handle visas. Open any city for the full address, phone, email, opening hours, jurisdiction and the visa application center that serves it.

All Russian consulates in Italy

Applying directly at the consulate

As of today, document intake is generally handled directly by the Russian consulate that serves you. Here is how that works in practice.

How does direct document submission at the Russian consulate work?

Direct submission means you lodge your visa application with the Russian consulate itself rather than through an intermediary. Prepare the documents listed by that mission for your category, including the applicable category-specific supporting document, book an appointment where required, submit the file and fee, then collect the passport after a decision. The consulate that serves your district in Italy is the responsible office.

Do I have to apply in person, or can someone submit on my behalf?

Current official listings differ on Italy's visa-centre network. The KD MID electronic-form directory lists Genoa, Milan and Rome, while the Russian Consulate General in Genoa also names Palermo and Verona. Confirm the currently serving centre with the responsible mission before filing.

Do I need an appointment to submit documents directly?

Some consulates work strictly by appointment booked through their online system, others accept walk-ins during fixed reception hours. Because appointment slots can fill up well in advance, plan early and confirm the booking procedure on the consulate's official page.
