Step 2 — where will you apply?

Where are you planning to apply for your Russian visa?

Pick the country and city whose Russian mission is responsible for your lawful residence. Temporary physical presence alone does not establish consular jurisdiction; confirm acceptance with the mission before you submit if you hold a passport issued by France.

How citizens of France enter Russia

Holders of an ordinary passport issued by France can enter Russia with the unified eVisa — apply online at evisa.kdmid.ru, where the applicable fee is shown. It permits 1 entry and a stay within 30 days. The published eVisa rule does not require an invitation. Work, study, additional entries or longer stays require the appropriate regular visa.

Unified e-Visa (online)

Official portal fee · stay within 30 days

France is one of the 65 nationalities eligible for Russia's unified e-Visa. You apply entirely online at the official MFA portal and follow its current application checklist. The published eVisa rule requires medical insurance, subject to any official exemption returned for the traveler. The published eVisa rule does not require an invitation. The eVisa currently permits 1 entry and a stay within 30 days.

Category-specific documents

Citizens of France apply for a standard Russian visa at a consulate or an authorised visa center. The supporting document depends on the visa category. For a tourist visa, tourist acceptance confirmation from an eligible issuer; a narrow accommodation-booking alternative applies only where the official rule allows it. Other categories use their own prescribed invitation or evidence.

Russian visa requirements for French citizens

Recommended route: Unified e-Visa for a qualifying short trip. Unified e-Visa for a qualifying short trip. For holders of ordinary French passports, the unified e-visa is single-entry; for private visits, business visits, tourism, and specified scientific/cultural/socio-political/economic/sporting events and related contacts; valid 120 days from issue with stay up to 30 days from entry. Apply online via MFA site/app no earlier than 86 days and no later than 4 calendar days before entry. Entry and exit must both be through listed authorized Russian border crossings; movement is nationwide except restricted places. No invitation, hotel booking confirmation, or other purpose document is required. France is expressly named on the MFA's current e-visa eligible-nationality list. This audit concerns ordinary French passports: official Russian mission guidance says French diplomatic passport holders are visa-free for up to 90 days, while service passport holders require a visa unless another visa-free rule applies.

Where to apply

  • E-visa: personal online application through https://evisa.kdmid.ru/ or the MFA mobile application; no France physical filing location or appointment.
  • Regular visa: Consular Service of the Russian Embassy, 40-50 Boulevard Lannes, 75116 Paris; Embassy visa submissions are by online appointment.
  • Regular visa: Consulate General, Place Sebastien Brant, 67000 Strasbourg.
  • Regular visa: Consulate General, 3 Avenue Ambroise Pare, 13008 Marseille.

Documents

  • E-visa: machine-readable French passport issued by country of nationality, valid at least six months from application date, with space for border stamps.
  • E-visa: JPEG passport-data-page image and compliant JPEG facial photo; separate application for each child; payment card.
  • Regular tourist visa: Russian tourist reception confirmation (CATE) with Russian hotel/travel-agency consular reference; if CATE stay exceeds 15 days, detailed itinerary signed and stamped by the same Russian travel agency.
  • Regular tourist visa: valid passport with at least two facing blank visa pages and validity at least six months after the requested visa expiry, plus photocopy of photo/signature/expiry pages.
  • Regular tourist visa: official visa.kdmid.ru application in Russian or English, printed, dated, and signed in black ink; recent 3.5 x 4.5 cm colour photo.
  • Regular tourist visa: qualifying travel medical/repatriation insurance certificate for entire requested validity.

Invitation

The unified e-Visa does not require an invitation or hotel-booking confirmation. Regular tourist visa support differs: Regular tourist visas require category-specific tourist support, unlike e-visas. The France mission describes the basis as either Russian travel-agency tourist reception confirmation or a registered hotel/accommodation reservation confirmation (the latter only for single entry). However, its detailed checklist requires CATE and says an ordinary hotel booking does not replace CATE. Operationally require CATE/official tourist confirmation; do not treat an ordinary booking alone as sufficient without confirmation from the accepting post.

Processing and fees

  • E-visa: no more than 4 calendar days from application submission; MFA overview says this includes weekends and bank holidays. A correction/resubmission delays the clock; the submission/resubmission day is excluded from FAQ processing calculation.
  • Regular tourist visa in France: published 10 working days; urgent treatment is unavailable for the described tourist visa. The consular service may request additional documents, interview the applicant, or extend issuance up to 30 days.
  • E-visa: centralized MFA portal confirms a non-refundable processing fee; no consular fee for children under six. A current official Russian mission e-visa notice publishes a total of an amount that varies with the exchange rate and must be checked before payment, including consular fee, bank commission, payment-system transaction costs and document pre-check, subject to exchange-rate fluctuations; children under six: about USD 2 transaction costs. Do not promise a fixed French-card/euro price.
  • Regular visa, official Embassy France EU-citizen tariffs: normal single EUR80; normal double EUR128; normal multiple EUR240; where applicable urgent single EUR160; urgent double EUR256; urgent multiple EUR480.

Medical insurance

E-visa: hold medical insurance valid in Russia for the entire stay; the opened centralized MFA page does not list France among reciprocity exemptions. Omission of insurance data in the e-visa form is not itself a refusal ground, but is not a waiver of the insurance rule. Regular tourist visa: for the full requested visa-validity period, provide medical-and-repatriation insurance from a Russian insurer or a French insurer with a Russian-partner reinsurance contract under Russian law. The certificate must show policy number, insured person's name, Russian-stay dates, insurer stamp, and insurer signature.

What is specific to French applicants

  • France is expressly named on the MFA's current e-visa eligible-nationality list.
  • This audit concerns ordinary French passports: official Russian mission guidance says French diplomatic passport holders are visa-free for up to 90 days, while service passport holders require a visa unless another visa-free rule applies.
  • French Russia visa centres in Paris, Marseille, Nice, and Strasbourg ceased activity on 24 November 2023; France-facing regular filing is now directed to consular posts.
  • For a French regular-visa insurance certificate, a French insurer must have a Russian-partner reinsurance contract under Russian law and include specified policy details, stamp, and signature.
  • France’s published regular-visa consular fees are denominated in euros (EUR80/EUR128/EUR240 normal), with the listed urgent tariffs where applicable.

Check before payment

  • Some mission pages retain superseded e-visa terms. Use the current central MFA rule: validity of 120 days and a stay of up to 30 days, subject to the published conditions.
  • Regular tourist support conflict: the France page initially permits a registered accommodation confirmation for a single-entry visa but later says an ordinary hotel reservation does not replace CATE. Do not guess; use CATE or obtain post confirmation.
  • The current MFA portal does not guarantee a fixed e-visa charge or a particular card issuer. Check the live payment invoice before paying.

Questions from French travellers

Can I use an e-visa to visit Russia with an ordinary French passport?

Yes: France is on the official e-visa list and tourism is in scope; it is one entry, 120-day validity, with up to 30 days from entry.

Do I need an invitation or confirmed hotel booking for the e-visa?

No. The MFA says no invitation, booking confirmation, or other purpose document is required; this differs from a regular tourist visa.

When should I apply and how long does e-visa processing take?

Apply 86 to 4 calendar days before entry; official processing is no more than four calendar days, but corrections/resubmission restart processing.

Can I enter or exit through any Russian border point with an e-visa?

No. Both entry and exit must use an authorized checkpoint; check the live list against the exact itinerary.

What must French travel insurance say?

For a regular tourist visa it must meet the Russia/French-insurer reinsurance rule, cover the full requested validity, and show policy number, insured name, Russian-stay dates, stamp, and signature. E-visa travellers also need Russia-valid medical insurance for the whole stay absent an applicable confirmed exemption.

Can I pay the e-visa with a French card and what will it cost?

The official FAQ does not guarantee a particular issuer. It says non-Russian-bank cards may be used, invoices may be in dirhams or yuan, and PayPal/invoice payment is unavailable. An official mission publishes an amount that varies with the exchange rate and must be checked before payment total subject to exchange fluctuations.

Russian consulates in France

There are 3 Russian diplomatic missions in France that handle visas. Open any city for the full address, phone, email, opening hours, jurisdiction and the visa application center that serves it.

All Russian consulates in France

Applying directly at the consulate

As of today, document intake is generally handled directly by the Russian consulate that serves you. Here is how that works in practice.

How does direct document submission at the Russian consulate work?

Direct submission means you lodge your visa application with the Russian consulate itself rather than through an intermediary. Prepare the documents listed by that mission for your category, including the applicable category-specific supporting document, book an appointment where required, submit the file and fee, then collect the passport after a decision. The consulate that serves your district in France is the responsible office.

Do I have to apply in person, or can someone submit on my behalf?

Submission channels and personal-appearance requirements are set by each Russian mission and may differ by visa category. Do not assume that representative or postal filing is available; confirm the current rule for France on the responsible mission's official website before preparing or sending documents.

Do I need an appointment to submit documents directly?

Some consulates work strictly by appointment booked through their online system, others accept walk-ins during fixed reception hours. Because appointment slots can fill up well in advance, plan early and confirm the booking procedure on the consulate's official page.
