Direct answer
First determine whether your passport and trip permit travel without a visa. Separately, check whether the unified eVisa fits the passport, purpose and dates. If neither route fits, choose the correct regular-visa category and follow the current checklist of the Russian mission responsible for your lawful residence.
Unified eVisa
For eligible ordinary passports and permitted trip purposes, the unified eVisa is valid for 120 days from issue, permits one entry and a stay of up to 30 days. Submit it between 86 and 4 days before entry. The decision period is no more than 4 calendar days. No invitation is required; medical insurance valid in Russia is required subject to official exemptions.
Submit through the official MFA eVisa website or the Russian Foreign Ministry mobile application offered by that service.
Regular-visa supporting documents
The supporting document depends on the visa category, nationality and responsible mission. There is no universal invitation, passport-validity or HIV-certificate formula for every regular-visa application.
| Category | Safe preparation rule |
|---|---|
| Tourist | Use the tourist acceptance confirmation and other documents required by the responsible mission |
| Business / humanitarian | Use the MIA invitation, MFA invitation or MFA decision route accepted by that mission and category |
| Private | Use the private-visa supporting route published by the responsible mission |
| Study | Confirm whether the mission accepts an MIA or MFA invitation and its current passport-validity and HIV-certificate conditions |
| Work | Confirm the accepted MIA/MFA route and the mission's current passport-validity and HIV-certificate scope |
| Transit | No invitation; use onward tickets and destination/transit documents as applicable |
Start with the official KD MID visa guidance, then use the category page of the mission that has jurisdiction over your lawful residence. Official mission checklists differ: the Dublin guidance and New York guidance illustrate why the filing mission's current rules must control.
The internal official category-specific visa document guidance summarizes categories, but it does not replace those official filing instructions.
Application steps
- Use the passport guide or Visa Checker to identify the route.
- If the eVisa applies, use the official MFA website or mobile application and its current checklist.
- If a regular visa applies, identify the category and responsible mission before collecting documents.
- Complete the official visa application form and use the mission or mission-confirmed intake channel responsible for your lawful residence.
- Confirm the accepted invitation authority, passport validity, HIV-certificate scope, appointment, fees, processing time, insurance and document format with that mission.
- Review every field in the travel document immediately after receipt.
Important limits
Do not rely on copied universal document, fee or processing ranges. Requirements depend on nationality, category, bilateral arrangements and the responsible mission. Do not use an employer letter or a generic commercial product as a substitute for the supporting route published by that mission.
Frequently asked questions
Do I always need an invitation for a Russian visa?
No. The unified eVisa and transit visa do not require an invitation. Other regular-visa categories use the specific supporting route accepted by the responsible Russian mission.
What documents are required for a work visa?
Use the responsible mission's current work-visa checklist. Official mission guidance can differ on whether an MIA or MFA invitation is accepted, passport validity, and when an HIV-negative certificate applies.
What documents are required for a study visa?
Use the responsible mission's current study-visa checklist. Official missions publish different invitation-authority, passport-validity and HIV-certificate conditions.
What does a transit visa require?
No invitation. Use onward tickets and the destination or transit visa/passport documents required by the responsible mission.
Where do I verify the authoritative checklist?
Start with KD MID visa guidance, then open the official category page of the Russian mission responsible for your lawful residence.
