Step 2 — where will you apply?

Where are you planning to apply for your Russian visa?

Pick the country and city whose Russian mission is responsible for your lawful residence. Temporary physical presence alone does not establish consular jurisdiction; confirm acceptance with the mission before you submit if you hold a passport issued by Australia.

How citizens of Australia enter Russia

Holders of an ordinary passport issued by Australia need a regular visa to enter Russia. Apply through the responsible Russian mission with a passport, application, photograph, applicable fee and the supporting document required for the selected visa category.

Regular visa (consulate / visa center)

Category-specific documents

Citizens of Australia apply for a standard Russian visa at a consulate or an authorised visa center. The supporting document depends on the visa category. For a tourist visa, tourist acceptance confirmation from an eligible issuer; a narrow accommodation-booking alternative applies only where the official rule allows it. Other categories use their own prescribed invitation or evidence.

Russian visa requirements for Australian citizens

Recommended route: Regular tourist visa before travel. Regular tourist visa before travel. Not available to ordinary Australian passport holders: Australia is absent from the MFA eligible-country list and the Embassy states that it is not included. Australian ordinary-passport holders cannot use Russia's unified eVisa; the primary tourism route is a regular paper tourist visa. The official Australian fee schedule is in AUD and publishes a March–September normal-processing warning of up to 20 days.

Where to apply

  • Embassy Consular Section, 78 Canberra Avenue, Griffith ACT 2603 — prior appointment and in-person submission; documents accepted 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
  • Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Sydney, 7–9 Fullerton Street, Woollahra NSW 2025 — in-person submission by website appointment. Its stated consular district includes NSW, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania.

Documents

  • Completed double-sided online visa application at visa.kdmid.ru, one per person, signed and dated; Canberra form addressed to the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Australia.
  • One professional 3.5 x 4.5 cm passport photo, glued in the marked place.
  • Original national passport valid at least six months after intended Russian departure (Canberra also says at least one page must be free from notes).
  • High-quality copy or original tourist confirmation (Podtverzdeniye) and tour voucher from an MFA-registered, authorised Russian travel agency or hotel; host reference number, tourist details, dates, itinerary and paid services are specified.
  • Copy of itinerary / flight details.

Invitation

Required: a standard tourist confirmation (Podtverzdeniye) and tour voucher from a Russian travel agency or hotel registered with the Russian MFA and authorised to invite foreign citizens; it is not merely a hotel booking confirmation.

Processing and fees

  • Embassy: normal processing is 10 business days; urgent is 3 business days. During March–September, normal processing can take up to 20 days.
  • Processing starts only after the Embassy has all necessary documents and payment.
  • Sydney Consulate says it may extend processing up to 20 business days in certain cases.
  • Embassy schedule per person in AUD: single-entry 120 for 10 working days or 240 urgent (3 working days).
  • Double-entry: AUD 192 for 10 working days or 384 urgent (3 working days).
  • Multiple-entry: AUD 360 for 10 working days or 720 urgent (3 working days).
  • The Embassy states the accepted visa fee is non-refundable.

Medical insurance

The Embassy's ordinary Australian tourist-visa checklist does not list medical insurance. A separate Embassy page says its reciprocity insurance requirement applies only to nationals of specified countries and the USA (Australia is not named), but that is not an ordinary tourist-visa page. Treat any case-specific insurance requirement as unconfirmed and verify with the filing post.

What is specific to Australian applicants

  • Australian ordinary-passport holders cannot use Russia's unified eVisa; the primary tourism route is a regular paper tourist visa.
  • The official Australian fee schedule is in AUD and publishes a March–September normal-processing warning of up to 20 days.
  • Australia has two official filing posts: Canberra and Sydney; Sydney publicly identifies a six-state consular district.
  • The required tourist confirmation and voucher must be from an MFA-registered, authorised Russian host and are explicitly not interchangeable with a regular booking confirmation.
  • Canberra and Sydney publish differing passport-blank-page instructions (one page free from notes versus two blank visa pages).

Check before payment

  • Ordinary passport holders from Australia are not currently e-visa eligible. Older regional e-visa notices do not create eligibility.
  • Canberra requires at least one passport page free from notes, while Sydney requires at least two blank visa pages. Use the stricter two-page standard or confirm with the selected post.
  • No reviewed ordinary Australian tourist-visa page expressly says insurance is required or waived; do not promise that it is unnecessary.

All Russian consulates in Australia

Applying directly at the consulate

As of today, document intake is generally handled directly by the Russian consulate that serves you. Here is how that works in practice.

How does direct document submission at the Russian consulate work?

Direct submission means you lodge your visa application with the Russian consulate itself rather than through an intermediary. Prepare the documents listed by that mission for your category, including the applicable category-specific supporting document, book an appointment where required, submit the file and fee, then collect the passport after a decision. The consulate that serves your district in Australia is the responsible office.

Do I have to apply in person, or can someone submit on my behalf?

Submission channels and personal-appearance requirements are set by each Russian mission and may differ by visa category. Do not assume that representative or postal filing is available; confirm the current rule for Australia on the responsible mission's official website before preparing or sending documents.

Do I need an appointment to submit documents directly?

Some consulates work strictly by appointment booked through their online system, others accept walk-ins during fixed reception hours. Because appointment slots can fill up well in advance, plan early and confirm the booking procedure on the consulate's official page.
